When HSS outperforms carbide
Most parting tool searches start before the buyer has settled on a material for the insert itself, so it’s worth being upfront about where QuadCutOff®’s HSS/TiN system earns its place. HSS holds an edge over carbide in three recurring situations: thin-wall tubing, where carbide’s lower toughness makes it prone to chipping as the wall closes in; softer alloys, where carbide’s hardness advantage doesn’t translate into a cleaner cut and can actually smear the material instead of shearing it; and low cutting-speed operations on light-duty or older machines that can’t reach the surface speeds carbide needs to perform well.
Carbide still has its place — mainly high-volume production in hardened or abrasive steels, run at higher cutting speeds where its heat resistance pays off. What is a parting tool used for?
A parting tool cuts a finished part completely off from bar stock in a single radial operation. That’s different from a grooving tool, which cuts a groove into the surface without separating the part — see our grooving tools if that’s what you need.
HSS or carbide parting tool — which is better?
It depends on the job. HSS/TiN, like QuadCutOff®, wins on thin-wall tubing, softer alloys and low cutting-speed work. Carbide tends to win in high-volume steel production run at higher speeds. QuadCutOff® is built and optimized for the former — talk to us if your job sits closer to the latter.
What is the maximum bar diameter for QuadCutOff®?
Q16 covers solid bar up to 13 mm (and tube up to roughly 24 mm). Q25 covers solid bar up to 20 mm (and tube up to roughly 32 mm). Larger tube diameters are possible because the blade stops short of centre — see the application diagram for exact limits.
Can the same holder be used for different diameters?
Yes — one QuadCutOff® holder accepts both Q16 and Q25 inserts, so you can switch between diameter ranges without changing tooling.
